Victoria 2 Hoi4 Converter

The Vic2 to HoI4 converter is a tool that takes a Victoria 2 save and generates an HoI4 scenario from it. It can be downloaded from this forum thread or from Steam. It is compatible with outputs from either CK2 to EU4 or CK3 to EU4, and EU4 to Vic2, allowing the player to play a continuous megacampaign from CK2/CK3 to HoI4.

Q: I used a mod, will the converter work with it?A: It depends on what the mod changed. Your best bet is to simply try (and let us know how it went). As far as we can tell, it does work well with NNM, PDM, HPM, and games converted from EU4.

For reasons that have been discussed in boring detail on the development thread, we can't use flags from Vic2 itself. From what I understand, the converter can use PDM's flags as long as we put a note in the readme file. But I'm worried there might be cases where the PDM tags don't match the Vic2 tags and the flags would be wrong. If someone could check to make sure that's not true (or document the cases where it is), I can add those flags and make lots of errors go away.

Catching bugs and oddities earlier means they get fixed earlier. I try to release test versions of the converter on the forum for testing, so running those and looking things over is helpful. And if you have professional experience in testing, well, I'm sure we could be doing things far better. Tell me how!

Many flags were developed for the EU4 to Vic2 converter, and are reused in this converter. If a flag cannot be found and the country was converted from EU4 to Vic2, then the flag from the conversion mod is used. Otherwise, no flag is provided. We hope that artists will help create missing flags.

This time around, I've aimed to fix some of the procedural things with the converter. The upshot is that it should be easier to volunteer to help. Also, there's now an automatic build of whatever I've been developing. So if I fix a bug, you can grab the development version to get the fix right away. Just check the readme file for the link. Unfortunately, I've had to drop support for Windows XP. None of the tools will build for it any more.

The EU4 to Vic2 converter is a tool that converts a Europa Universalis 4 save and generates a Victoria 2 scenario (mod) from it. It can be downloaded from this forum thread or from Steam. It is compatible with CK2 and CK3 converted savegames, as well as with Vic2 to HoI4 converter, allowing the player to play a continuous megacampaign from Imperator through CK2/CK3 to HoI4. This project, while still active and supported, has been succeeded by EU4 to Vic3 converter project.

Here is a general list of Converter capabilities and conversion mechanic explanations. For more information feel free to ask for clarifications on forums or take a peek at the code.Note: The converter includes a configurables/ folder that contains all data files with rules it uses during conversion. These files are there for a reason - so the user can view them and modify them according to specific needs. Do not be shy to hack away and change them so the conversion fits expected goals.

Q: When starting conversion, conversion immediately ends, not producing anything.A: Inside the converter folder there is a file called VC_redist.x64.exe. This is Microsoft's C++ redistributable package the converter relies on. Install it and re-run the conversion.

Q: Vic2 is crashing at Initializing Maplogic. What do I do?A: Clear your map cache by deleting the cache folder inside ".../victoria 2/map/" in both My Documents and the Victoria 2 install location.

Q: The converter crashes after no time with no errors and no log.txt (when running through the frontend). What went wrong?A: You may need to install this if you are not on Windows 10: -us/kb/2999226. If this does not help upload your save to the PDX forums for further study.

Q: How can I customize my game after converting?A: Use the guide in after_converting.txt in the converter subdirectory. Scan through configurables/ folder and look into the myriad of configuration files - a great majority of these files is intended to be modified by users to acheive specific conversion results.

Q: Some/all country names appear as X25, FRA etc.A: This is an issue with the localisation. See above if you may have changed the language, if not check the localisation files in the converter for the offending countries. Sometimes Vic2 fails to load localizations and merely needs to be restarted.

Converter relies on configuration.txt, a file inside the converter directory, to load all the necessary resources. This file is uniformly generated by the Frontend every time a conversion is started. However, for non-windows builds the converter has to be ran manually and this file needs to be set by hand as well.

This converter allows a player to take a game from the end of CK3 and convert it into a playable EU4 save, continuing the campaign. Produced mod is compatible with the EU4 to Vic3, EU4 to Vic2 and Vic2 to HoI4 converters, allowing the player to play a continuous megacampaign from Imperator through CK3 all the way to HoI4. This project is a successor of the CK2 to EU4 converter project.

Q: Is this the official converter?A: This converter has been done by the same team that specializes in other Paradox converters: Imperator->CK3,CK2->EU4, EU4->Vic2, Vic2->HoI4, CK2->EU3, EU3->Vic2, Vic2->HoI3. It is not official, but it produces as accurate conversion as possible.

Q: How can I customize my game after converting?A: Use the guide in after_converting.txt in the converter subdirectory. Scan through configurables/ folder and look into the myriad of configuration files - a great majority of these files is intended to be modified by users to achieve specific conversion results.

Q: Is linux supported?A: The converter does compile on Linux, and you need to compile it from source it to run it. Clone the github repository + all submodules, and run build_linux.sh. If you already have ImageMagick 7 installed, delete relevant commands from the script. Also you'll need to export LD_PATH for the imagemagick libs so the converter can find them. You may need to export the path even when compiling and installing ImageMagick from source.

Q: I have found errors / bugs / glitches / wrong provinces / culture mismaps / religion mismaps / broken names /...This is good! We need user input to see where we mapped stuff wrong. Please come to converter release thread and report any bugs. When reporting upload your ck3 save, converter's log.txt and describe in detail what is wrong. Screenshots always help. We fix user reported bugs as priority.

Q: I want to help!We always need help. Not only for this converter, but all others. As they share the same pool of developers we're often stretched thin. We need experienced coders, with working knowledge of C++ and git. We also need modders willing to scour through our mapping files, verify the events, triggers, general data files and so on. If you think you could contribute, please visit our development thread and say hello.

This is pecial build of Vic2 to HOI4 converter. This one needs for the converted Vic2 save from Eu4, and will do the same, as Eu4toVic2 one - transfer flags, colors, cultures (as ideas) and will generate special focus tree branch for the major powers, depending on political situation. Please read Instruction text file in the archive for the instructions, it will contain info on doing convertion, and also will explain the last, but optional stage of Mega Campaign - Stellaris part.
