VLC media player (previously the VideoLAN Client and commonly known as simply VLC) is a free and open-source, portable, cross-platform media player software and streaming media server developed by the VideoLAN project. VLC is available for desktop operating systems and mobile platforms, such as Android, iOS and iPadOS. VLC is also available on digital distribution platforms such as Apple's App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft Store.
..at least with "native skin" there's no QT-Key left behind - I just checked it. When activating alternative skins, the Key appears but can be handled with a batch or portable starter like gbrao mentioned.
Vlcplayer Portable
Download File: https://urluso.com/2vEpsW
The file vlcrc in the 'portable' folder has this entry : [skins2] # Skinnable Interface # Skin to use (string) skins2-last=vlc_deepdark.vltVLC seems to accept relative paths (here at least). I have vlc_deepdark.vlt in the same directory as vlc.exe and it works OK.Also with 3.0.0, no files/dirs left anywhere else. But creates a QT reg key :HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QtProject\OrganizationDefaults\FileDialogI run vlc from a NSIS exe which deletes that key after VLC exits.
BTW, these (zip and 7zip) have been described elsewhere as 'portable', they do not require installation (unpack and run), they apparently still some files (including an INI) in user AppData folder. I have not verified that.
i made myself portable versions of SPlayer, MPlayer WW, and PowerDVD because i dislike VLC's interface and video quality; it feels and looks unpolished. I also downloaded PortableApp's SMPlayer, but it doesn't work for me; very rare that an app from PortableApp doesn't work. More than likely, it's the player itself that's causing the problem. I use all of them, but in the end: i use VLC 99% of the time. I just wish the video quality was better and the interface wasn't so rough and rugged. If VLC fixed that, i could get rid of the rest.
It's ridiculous ain't it? that's why and html tags are going to be nightmare for webmasters and users alike. Anyways the portable apps version is no bigger than 30 MB but it comes at a cost as my anti-virus is struggling to scan all these dll files that vlc is loading into memory. I no it's partially because it's been upx compressed, but I don't see why vlc can't just load these plugins as they are needed.
not even the version at portableapps.com is truly portable.on vista it creates a folder: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\vlcI hate applications that insist on creating files and folders all over the place.
To make batch file drag-n-dropable, change batch file to read:start /D"%d0%p0" vlc.exe %* --no-plugins-cache --config=vlcrcAlso works if you make batch file registered app for file extensions (e.g. register as app for .MP4 extension, and any MP4s double clicked in windows explorer will open in VLC with portable settings). Only tested on XP. Shouldn't work on 98 etc.

ASHghost, thanks for that info. I had been rather blindly following the portableapps.com web site. i've seen others do it, advertising thinstalled versions of apps that are already portable.. didn't think to question haller. thanks for the info.
@Eldad: The portable version is still at the Videolan website, in either 7-zip or zip archives. The issue with portableapps.com apps is that Haller generally just adds a launcher and a wrapper on them that allows them to write to the registry, then cleans up when you shut them down. If the app crashes, the registry modifications are still there. Also, I find it slightly disingenuous of him to release portable versions of apps that have their own portable versions: VLC, Pidgin, Notepad++, Filezilla, KeePass, and MPlayer and I think one or two others that I don't use all have official portable releases. Knattefnattetjatte describes how to make your own simple launcher above, and this will make your VLC truly portable. Also, the description says 32MB _uncompressed_
The official VLC site is no longer showing the portable version. This version can be found on: _video/vlc_portableIn it you can download the portable version and it self exreacting but as PORTALBE to a file of your choice. Also it is only 9.8MB and not 32MB.
You can find another portable edition of VideoLAN here: (X-VideoLAN 0.8.6) =none_Files&dpath=misc/Files/2%20-%20X-Software/3%20-%20Multimedia/(Please select the english language from the right "Hot news" block to have the web site translated in english)
Probably the best media player. I have not yet come across a file, that VLC have not been able to play. I have not installed any codecs on my new laptop. You can create a .bat file to launch VLC in portable mode. Create portable.bat in the program directory. Open portable.bat in Notepad and copy-paste "vlc.exe --no-plugins-cache --config=vlcrc" and save it. Launch VLC by double clicking on portable.bat
